Press Release Body: New Delhi, 19 December 2007:
Fusing creativity with technology is his biggest contribution to the fashion industry. Yengkhom Daevson, the designer and the inventor of Seamless Woven Garment machine (SWG) today unveiled his Autumn Future Collection at the NIFT campus, New Delhi.
The show called 'SKIN' was unique in the sense that the garments exhibited were all made by Devson himself using the machine he invented. "It is a unique combination of fashion innovation with technological development", said Sr. Professor Asha Baxi of NIFT, New Delhi.
During the last couple of years, Devson has been concentrating in upgrading his unique invention called BEMM, a seamless weaving garment machine named after his sister. Developed during his final year at NIFT, this innovative machine has been granted a patent in India and an application has been filed for Patent Cooperation Treaty or PCT in few countries. The fund for improving BEMM has been granted by TePP, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.
The up gradation started with the idea of using engineering drawing as one pioneering way of pattern making with an aim to achieve the production of 3D mechanical and voluminous garments. It explores techniques and mechanisms to overcome difficulties in making a garment with limited resources. The machine BEMM slashes down the number of steps taken in traditional garment making and reduces the production time in addition to cost cutting.
Explaining the usefulness of his invention, Devson said "In garment designing, the right choice of fabric for a particular design is needed. When designers are unable to find the right fabric, they either replace the first choice with a similar one or end up choosing a totally different fabric for the design. Since high-quality execution of designs also depends on few skilled tailors and other professional staff, there is this unavoidable tendency to spend more on the production process impacting on the cost of the final product." Now, his invention of futuristic BEMM promises to overcome these hurdles.
Yengkhom Daevson, also known as Momoo, was born in Manipur. After finishing school, Momoo was trained as a Mechanical Engineer at the Dr. AIT Ambedkar Institute of Technology, Bangalore (now Bengalaroo). With dreams nurtured in his heart, he found his true calling in Fashion Designing and left the engineering course mid-way. Momoo passed out of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Mumbai in 2002.
Daevson's contributions have been appreciated at different stages of his journey. He received the Most Innovative Garment Construction Award in the NIFT graduation show, 2002. He hit the limelight when he won the Best Designer Award at the GenArt International Design Competition held in New York 2003. He had also designed some collection for the Durban Fashion Week in 2006. In the same year, Daevson was one of the few selected designers from India who participated at the World of Wearable Art Design Competition, New Zealand. He bagged the Most Innovative Designer Product award for his work in Seamless Woven Garments (SWG) at the North-East Trade Expo, 2005, held in New Delhi.
